Total-loss vehicle guide

Can you sell a totaled car?

A totaled vehicle may still be sold when the seller has authority to sell it and the title, insurance, lien, and ownership situation allow the transaction. The current condition and title status must be reviewed separately.

01

Totaled describes an insurance decision

It does not by itself confirm the current title, ownership, or physical condition. Ask the insurer and California DMV about official status when those facts are unclear.

02

Explain what remains

Describe visible damage, missing parts, airbags, wheels, steering, keys, running status, storage location, and access. Current photos can help when they are safe to obtain.

03

Resolve authority before release

An open claim, lien, insurer ownership, or title change can affect who may sell the vehicle. This guide is not legal advice; confirm the current record with the relevant insurer, lienholder, DMV, or authority.

Common questions

Clear answers for this situation.

Is a totaled car automatically salvage-title?

No. Confirm the current title or official record rather than assuming title status from the damage or insurance decision.

Can a non-running totaled car be picked up?

It may be possible after the vehicle, location, access, equipment needs, ownership, and transaction are reviewed.
